A powerful thunderstorm struck Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday evening, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds.
The sudden downpour offered a break from the intense summer heat but caused severe disruption across the region.
Footage from Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport showed continuous rainfall.
Strong winds hit the central and western parts of Delhi. Brief hailstorms lashed areas such as Gol Market and Lodi Road.
In Noida, heavy rain and hail reduced visibility and waterlogged major roads.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that a cyclonic circulation over Haryana triggered the storm.
Moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal intensified the system.
Around 8:30 PM, the IMD issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR, warning of continued intense weather through the night.
Gusts reached 79 kmph in Safdarjung and 72 kmph in Palam. Trees fell, hoardings collapsed, and traffic slowed down across central and south Delhi, as well as in neighbouring NCR cities.
Several minor accidents were reported due to waterlogged roads and reduced visibility.
Flight operations at Delhi airport were hit. The airport authority advised passengers to check with airlines for real-time updates.
Multiple carriers warned of delays and rescheduling due to poor visibility and turbulent weather.
Earlier in the day, Delhi had recorded a ‘feels like’ temperature of over 50°C, with actual temperatures near 45°C.
The evening storm brought a sharp drop in temperature, offering temporary relief to residents struggling in the oppressive heat.
The IMD had already forecast dust storms and thunderstorms with light to moderate rain and winds up to 70 kmph.
Authorities have urged people to stay indoors during storms and to report fallen trees or power outages to local helplines as the pre-monsoon activity continues.
