HD Deve Gowda, Shobha Karandlaje Back PM Modi’s Austerity Appeal

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje on Monday strongly defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for restrained consumption and austerity measures amid rising global instability and economic uncertainty.

Speaking in Bengaluru, Deve Gowda stated that PM Modi urged 150 crore Indians to use national resources responsibly due to the adverse effects of international conflicts involving the United States, Israel and Iran. He said the ongoing tensions in West Asia have triggered economic instability across several nations and increased pressure on global markets.

According to him, the Prime Minister’s appeal reflected the need for caution during uncertain times.

“This is the negative impact of continuing global conflicts. Everyone should welcome the Prime Minister’s appeal,” Deve Gowda remarked while supporting restrained consumption practices.

Union Minister of State for MSME and Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje also endorsed PM Modi’s message, stating that he has consistently promoted responsible living and mindful consumption over the past decade.

Karandlaje recalled that during the Covid-19 pandemic, PM Modi encouraged citizens to practise yoga and adopt healthier lifestyles. She added that for the last two years, he has repeatedly advised people to reduce oil consumption.

Karandlaje emphasised that India remains heavily dependent on imports of edible oil and petroleum products.

According to her, nearly 70 per cent of edible oil requirements are sourced from foreign countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia.

Karandlaje stated that reducing oil usage would lower foreign exchange expenditure and strengthen India’s journey towards self-reliance. She further noted that petroleum products are essential for transportation and fertiliser manufacturing, making careful consumption crucial.

Referring to soaring gold prices amid global tensions, Shobha Karandlaje cautioned citizens against excessive gold purchases. She said PM Modi’s appeal encourages people to prioritise national economic interests.

Karandlaje added that the appeal also focuses on preserving India’s foreign exchange reserves during uncertain international conditions.
