Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov has stirred up some chatter with his recent remarks, including a playful jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s involvement in chess. Kasparov, known for his strategic prowess on the chessboard and sharp political commentary, couldn’t help but notice politicians delving into his beloved game.
The exchange began when Bollywood actor Ranveer Shorey shared a video clip of Rahul Gandhi during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Meghalaya. He challenged Kasparov with the caption, “Nice one, @Kasparov63, but can you handle this move?”
Kasparov responded humorously, cautioning against mistaking his jest for serious political analysis, but also noting the politician’s interest in chess.
This isn’t the first time Kasparov has commented on political matters.
Earlier, he responded to a user’s musings about Vishwanathan Anand and himself retiring early from chess. He suggested that one should conquer in Raebareli before aiming for the top, in a light-hearted manner. Kasparov’s comments come in the wake of Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s praise for Rahul Gandhi, referring to him as both an adept politician and chess player.
Rahul’s decision to contest from Raebareli, following his previous stint in Wayanad, has sparked discussions about strategic political moves. The move to contest Raebareli, a traditional Congress stronghold previously held by Sonia Gandhi, has faced criticism from opponents.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused Rahul of abandoning Wayanad, akin to his loss in Amethi to Smriti Irani in 2019.
Irani, in response to Rahul’s candidacy in Raebareli, accused Congress of conceding defeat in Amethi preemptively.
The upcoming electoral battle in Raebareli between Rahul Gandhi and Congress defector Dinesh Pratap Singh promises to be closely watched amidst the ongoing general elections.
