Gajendra Singh Shekhawat Highlights ‘Gyan Bharatam’ Mission To Preserve Manuscripts

During the conclave, CMD and Editor-in-Chief of Bharat Express, Upendrra Rai, raised the issue of preserving the vast knowledge contained in ancient monasteries, temples, and educational institutions.

Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat explained that the initiative was first conceptualised during the tenure of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, with the launch of the ‘Manuscript Mission’ to catalogue these invaluable texts.

Under PM Modi, the mission has been taken forward in ‘mission mode’ and named ‘Gyan Bharatam’.

Its goal is to systematically locate, document, and digitise India’s priceless manuscripts, ensuring that centuries-old knowledge reaches modern audiences and remains accessible for future generations.

Shekhawat highlighted that India houses millions of manuscripts written on palm leaves, bhojpatra, and handmade silk paper, covering subjects ranging from astronomy and agriculture to medicine and philosophy.

The government has identified over 50 lakh manuscripts and signed MOUs with 27+ institutions to speed up cataloguing, preservation, and digitisation.

The ‘Gyan Bharatam’ mission goes beyond preservation, reflecting India’s dedication to its cultural and intellectual heritage.

By safeguarding these manuscripts, the government reconnects citizens with India’s scholarly past and also lays a foundation for knowledge-driven growth towards 2047.

Digitised manuscripts will support research, education, and public engagement, showcasing the richness of India’s intellectual traditions.

As Minister Shekhawat noted, the mission ensures ancient wisdom continues to guide India’s journey to a developed, culturally enriched, and technologically advanced nation.
