PM Modi Promises…

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the horrific incident. He regarded it as “shameful”. The PM made the promise to take tough action on this incident. This, however, was the first comment on the ongoing riots in the state of Manipur. The riots have taken the life of 125 people as of now.

Early in May, conflicts broke out, although most of the violence was calmed down quickly. However, isolated assassinations and violence returned shortly after, and since then, tensions have persisted in the 3.2 million-person state that borders Myanmar. More than 40,000 people have fled their houses, and hundreds of people have been hurt.

Manipur Government gets notice from NHRC

The Manipur government and the state’s police chief have been given a notice by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) about two women who were allegedly paraded naked by a mob.

In a statement, the NHRC added that it was interested in learning about the actions taken or planned to protect citizens’ human rights, particularly those of women and other vulnerable groups, against such “barbaric incidents”.

The NHRC said it has “taken cognizance of complaints seeking its urgent intervention into the incident of a mob taking away five members of a tribal family from police custody in B Phainom village of Kangpokpi district in Manipur on May 4”.
