Former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique was shot dead in Bandra, Mumbai, on Saturday evening. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sources confirmed that three bullets were fired at Mr. Siddique in his son Zeeshan’s office. Three suspects are now in custody.
Hospital sources revealed that one bullet struck Mr. Siddique in the chest. Doctors performed continuous CPR in an attempt to save him. Siddique had recently joined Ajit Pawar’s NCP after a long career with the Congress.
The shooting took place on Dussehra, just months before the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Siddique, a former three-time MLA from Bandra West, had left the Congress in February, while his son Zeeshan was expelled in August.
NCP Spokesperson Brijmohan Shrivastav expressed disbelief, stating that Mr. Siddique had never mentioned receiving any threats. Siddique, known for his political influence and social gatherings, famously mediated a feud between Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan at an Iftaar party in 2013.
The investigation is ongoing.
