Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently concluded a remarkable tour of Ladakh as part of the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages initiative.
The visit, centred on Hanle village in the Union Territory’s remote Changthang region, offered a glimpse into the region’s serene landscape, thriving spiritual heritage, and rising cosmic tourism sector.
Upon arrival in Leh, Sitharaman was immediately struck by the breathtaking landscape: rugged hills, high-altitude grasslands, and valleys painted in natural gradients of purple, pistachio green, ochre and aquamarine.
After acclimatisation, her team visited the 16th-century Leh Palace, where she attended a curated sound-and-light show recounting the monument’s history, now an emerging cultural attraction.
En route to Hanle, Sitharaman visited the Hemis Monastery—Ladakh’s largest monastic institution and home to the Red Hat sect of Buddhism.
Nestled among rocky mountains, its architecture and the monks’ quiet devotion exuded an atmosphere of inner peace.
The Tulku (head monk) shared how improved connectivity had halved travel time to his native village, showcasing the tangible results of enhanced infrastructure.
The journey continued through the Changthang Valley, where Sitharaman spotted pairs of majestic Black Necked Cranes and wild asses grazing across pristine grasslands.
In the villages along the way, she observed nomadic shepherds collecting pashmina wool—a livelihood sustained by seasonal migration with their yaks and sheep.
Mobile veterinary services and seasonal Anganwadi centres, supported by the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, are helping bridge access to health and education for these remote communities.
Building on this immersive experience of Ladakh’s pastoral life, the Finance Minister then arrived in Hanle, where she was welcomed with yak-butter tea and introduced to the village’s most prestigious identity—India’s first Dark Sky Reserve.
Situated at a high altitude and far from urban light pollution, Hanle is home to the MACE (Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment) telescope, which enables cutting-edge astrophysical research through the detection of high-energy gamma rays.
What makes Hanle particularly special is the involvement of the local community.
Villagers trained as ‘Astro Ambassadors’ now host tourists in homestays named after stars and galaxies, transforming this remote settlement into an emerging hub of cosmic tourism and scientific engagement.
Later, as the journey neared its conclusion, the Finance Minister travelled to the picturesque Pangong Tso lake.
There, the shimmering waters and colour-shifting hills reflected both the stillness and vibrancy of Ladakh’s natural beauty.
In her reflections, Sitharaman also emphasised Ladakh’s unique convergence of rugged terrain, spiritual heritage, and cosmic curiosity—a region where tradition meets the universe, and where governance is empowering communities to thrive on the edge of the extraordinary.
‘Charaiveti Charaiveti’—Keep moving forward—perfectly describes Ladakh’s people, whether they are herders, monks, tourists, or skywatchers.
The Finance Minister’s visit reaffirmed how governance under Prime Minister Modi is empowering every corner of India—spiritually, economically, and even cosmically.
