Flood Fury In Karligaad Rivulet As Cloudburst Strikes Sahastradhara

A cloudburst struck the Sahastradhara area of Dehradun on Monday night, causing heavy flooding in the Karligaad rivulet and leaving behind severe destruction.

The downpour caused the rivulet to swell rapidly, leading to the collapse of a major bridge and damaging numerous properties along its course.

Early assessments indicate that dozens of nearby shops have been badly damaged or swept away. Two hotels also collapsed under the impact of the floodwaters.

The district administration moved quickly in response.

District Magistrate Savin Bansal took charge of operations, directing rescue and relief work with the support of various agencies.

Teams from the SDRF, NDRF, PWD and other departments reached the site overnight with heavy machinery and tools.

Residents living close to the rivulet were also evacuated to safer areas.

Officials confirmed that two people remain unaccounted for, and search teams are continuing their efforts.

Authorities have also put all departments on high alert, with relief work being carried out under the Incident Response System (IRS).

As directed by the DM, SDM Kumkum Joshi arrived at the scene during the night to oversee operations directly.

Local residents have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety instructions.

While the flooding has caused widespread damage, officials emphasised that swift measures are being taken to protect lives and assist those affected.

Rescue of the missing and support for victims remain the administration’s main focus.

Just last month, a similar incident occurred in Chamoli district. A cloudburst in Mopata village left two people missing and caused damage to both a house and a cowshed. Authorities also believe that 15–20 animals were trapped under the debris.
