The Manipur government has ordered a suspension of internet and mobile data services in five key valley districts- Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur- for a period of five days.
This action follows widespread protests in Imphal East and West triggered by the reported arrest of a leader of the Meitei radical outfit ‘Arambai Tenggol’.
The directive, issued late on Saturday night by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N Ashok Kumar, cited the risk of anti-social elements using social media platforms to circulate inflammatory content.
The order specifically warned against the spread of ‘images, hate speech and hate video messages’ that could exacerbate public unrest and threaten communal harmony.
The official order expressed grave concern about ‘an imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property’ due to the potential circulation of false rumours and inflammatory material through social media and messaging services.
It stressed that this could lead to widespread disturbances affecting public tranquillity and communal peace.
To contain the situation, the suspension encompasses internet, mobile data, VSAT, and VPN services within the specified districts, effective from midnight Saturday.
However, exemptions may be granted for certain essential services via government whitelisting.
The restrictions come after protests erupted on Saturday night in parts of Imphal, particularly at Kwakeithel and Uripok in Imphal West District.
Protesters blocked roads, burning tyres and old furniture, demanding the immediate release of the arrested Arambai Tenggol leader.
Senior officials led additional security personnel into Imphal East and West to manage the situation and restore order.
Police have not publicly confirmed details regarding the arrest.
BJP Rajya Sabha member Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba confronted security officials late on Saturday, expressing concern over the arrest and related developments.
The government’s order emphasised that violating the suspension could lead to legal consequences, highlighting the urgency and seriousness of the situation.
The Manipur government’s decision to suspend digital communication services aims to curb the rapid spread of misinformation and maintain peace during a volatile period.
The deployment of additional security forces indicates a concerted effort to stabilise the region and prevent further escalation.
