First Snowfall Transforms Kashmir As Winter Sets In And Tourists Look Ahead To Festive Season

Kashmir experienced its first spell of snowfall this season on Monday, marking the end of a prolonged dry phase and signalling the onset of Chillai Kalan, the region’s harshest winter period.

Snowfall in the upper reaches and rainfall across the plains refreshed the Valley, offering relief to residents, farmers and the tourism sector alike.

The popular ski destination of Gulmarg received nearly nine inches of fresh snow, covering the landscape in a thick, white layer.

The development has lifted spirits among skiers, hoteliers and travellers planning Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Other hill resorts, including Sonamarg and Pahalgam, also recorded their first snowfall of the season, raising expectations of a surge in tourist arrivals over the coming days.

Relief for Farmers And Water Resources

The precipitation has come as welcome news for farmers and orchard owners, who had grown increasingly concerned over the impact of the extended dry spell on Rabi crops and next year’s fruit yield.

Snowfall during Chillai Kalan plays a vital role in replenishing perennial water sources in the mountains, which sustain rivers, lakes and springs during the summer months.

Medical experts believe the rain and snow will help improve air quality across the Valley, potentially easing respiratory and chest-related ailments.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain or snowfall at scattered locations in the next 24 hours.

Temperatures dipped across the region, with Srinagar recording a minimum of 4°C, Gulmarg minus 2.4°C and Pahalgam 2.4°C.

In the Jammu division, Jammu city registered 10.4°C, while colder conditions prevailed in areas such as Banihal and Bhaderwah.

Snow accumulation has forced authorities to close key routes, including the Srinagar–Leh highway and the Mughal Road. Officials have also suspended traffic on Sinthan Pass, Razdan Pass and Sadna Top to ensure safety amid wintry conditions.
