Fire On Yamuna Expressway Kills Nine Passengers; CM Yogi Announces Rs 2 Lakh Aid

Nine passengers, including a woman, were killed after a double-decker sleeper bus carrying around 35 people caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway near Jewar in Greater Noida late Wednesday night.

The blaze spread rapidly through the bus, trapping several passengers inside.

Most of those travelling were reportedly asleep when the fire broke out. Some passengers managed to escape through the windows as the flames engulfed the vehicle.

Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident.

Rescue and relief operations were launched, while emergency teams worked to control the fire and evacuate passengers trapped inside.

The bus was travelling towards Uttar Pradesh when the incident occurred.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. A preliminary assessment suggests that a short circuit in the air-conditioning system may have caused the blaze.

Police have registered a case in connection with the incident and taken the driver and conductor into custody for questioning.

The incident has raised concerns over safety arrangements, emergency exits and luggage handling on long-distance sleeper buses.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed and directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. He further assured all possible assistance to the affected families.

CM Yogi announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for injured passengers.

In a post, CM Yogi described the loss of lives as ‘extremely heartbreaking and soul-wrenching’ and offered condolences to the bereaved families. He prayed for peace for the departed souls and a speedy recovery for those injured.
