On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called attention to the growing mismatch between the changing international landscape and the institutions responsible for governing it, arguing that existing global systems have not kept pace with new realities.
Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi, PM Modi described the current period as a ‘world between orders’ and raised questions about the forces reshaping international relations and India’s place in the emerging global framework.
The Prime Minister attributed the transition to major changes in economic power, technological development and national aspirations.
Countries that had little or no influence when the existing international system was established are now seeking a greater role in global decision-making, he noted.
Reflecting on the lessons of the Second World War, PM Modi said lasting international stability could not rest solely on power and national interests.
Dialogue, cooperation and peaceful settlement of disputes had been central to the creation of the United Nations, he observed.
The Prime Minister questioned whether international institutions had adapted sufficiently to the transformations taking place across the world, answering that they had not.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the historical importance of the United Nations and other multilateral bodies but said they increasingly struggled to address present-day challenges.
The emergence of new powers and demands for wider representation have highlighted the need for updated approaches to global governance.
PM Modi reiterated India’s call for international institutions to become more representative, inclusive and responsive to 21st-century realities and contemporary challenges.
