Enhanced Security For Independence Day As PM Modi Presides Over Ceremony At Red Fort

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead the nation in celebrating India’s 78th Independence Day on Thursday from the historic Red Fort in Delhi. The Prime Minister will unfurl the national flag and deliver his annual address from the fort’s ramparts, marking his 11th consecutive Independence Day speech in office.

This year’s theme, “Viksit Bharat @ 2047,” emphasizes the government’s ambition to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, the centenary of independence. The ceremony will further  commence with PM Modi being welcomed by senior government and military officials and inspecting the Guard of Honour, coordinated this year by the Indian Navy.

A highlight of the event will be the unfurling of the national flag, accompanied by a 21-gun salute from the 1721 Field Battery, which will utilize indigenous 105mm Light Field Guns. Approximately 6,000 special guests, representing various sectors of Indian society—including youth, farmers, women, and beneficiaries of government schemes—are invited to witness the occasion.

In anticipation of the celebrations, security has been heightened across the nation, with over 10,000 police officers and 3,000 traffic personnel deployed in Delhi. The city is under close surveillance, featuring 700 AI-powered facial recognition cameras equipped with high-resolution capabilities. Additional security measures include the positioning of snipers and elite SWAT teams at strategic locations. Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh will be sealed after 11:30 p.m. on August 14, with stringent vehicle checks implemented.

Delhi Traffic Police

The Delhi Traffic Police have announced route closures and diversions around the Red Fort, and restrictions on sub-conventional aerial platforms, such as para-gliders and drones, will be in effect until the end of the Independence Day events. Similar security enhancements are in place across other parts of the country, including heightened police presence in Punjab and Haryana, and intensified vigilance by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the international border with Bangladesh.

In the Maoist-affected Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, the national flag will be hoisted for the first time in 13 remote villages, marking a significant milestone in the region’s history.

The ceremony will also feature students from the Atal Innovation Mission and PM SHRI scheme, volunteers from Mera Yuva Bharat, and members of the National Service Scheme. The Indian contingent from the recent Paris Olympics and other distinguished guests, including winners of online competitions and traditional attire participants, will also be in attendance.

Upon arrival at the Red Fort, PM Modi will be greeted by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, MoS Defence Sanjay Seth, and Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane. He will inspect the Guard of Honour, which will consist of personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police, and will be commanded by Commander Arun Kumar Mehta.

However, the ceremony will include a performance by the Punjab Regiment Military band and a floral shower by two Indian Air Force helicopters. Following the flag unfurling, the Prime Minister will address the nation, and the event will conclude with a rendition of the National Anthem by 2,000 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets and 500 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers.
