Eight people, including women and children, died after a wall collapsed in South East Delhi’s Jaitpur area on Saturday morning. The collapse followed heavy rain that pounded the city overnight and into the morning.
Police said the incident happened in a slum in the Hari Nagar locality. The victims were identified as Muttu Ali (45), Rabibul (30), Shabibul (30), Rubina (25), Dolly (25), Hashibul, Rukhsana (6), and Hasina (7).
The wall, located near a temple, crumbled with a loud noise. Officers said the weak structure could not withstand the weight of the rain-soaked roof and adjoining walls.
Local residents ran to the site after hearing the crash. They helped rescuers pull out the victims and rush them to the hospital. Police confirmed all eight died on the way.
Authorities evacuated the slum, which houses scrap dealers, to prevent further accidents.
The downpour caused severe waterlogging in many parts of Delhi-NCR, including Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, and Connaught Place. Traffic congestion worsened due to the Rakhi festival rush.
Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport were also hit. Data from Flightradar showed over 130 delays on Saturday morning. Airlines issued advisories on X, urging passengers to allow extra travel time and check flight updates.
IndiGo and SpiceJet warned travellers about the weather and traffic. Air India cautioned that rain could impact flight schedules and advised planning ahead.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a rain alert for the day. It warned of moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph. Safety guidelines urged residents to drive carefully, secure loose items, and avoid sheltering under trees during lightning.
