Education’s Real Purpose Is Human Building, Says RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said education should not be limited to career building but should focus on developing individuals with strong human values and a sense of responsibility towards society.

Bhagwat made the remarks while interacting with students from Class 10 to postgraduate level at a dialogue programme organised jointly by IILM University and Banyan Tree School in New Delhi.

Addressing students and teachers, Bhagwat said his personal experience showed that the younger generation was more honest and naturally more courageous than previous generations. He further urged students to consider their responsibility towards India while discussing the issue of talent migration.

Bhagwat said Indians may find opportunities and facilities abroad, but their identity remains connected to their country. Bhagwat urged young people to retain what they need for themselves and contribute the rest to society and the nation.

“Education’s purpose is not only career building; its real purpose is human building,” Bhagwat said, adding that education distinguishes human beings from animals and that nation-building becomes possible through character building.

Citing examples of spiritual figures, Bhagwat referred to Neem Karoli Baba and said Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had visited him. He further mentioned Ramakrishna Paramahansa, the spiritual teacher of Swami Vivekananda, who did not receive formal schooling.

Bhagwat said several Indian saints had limited access to formal education but became influential leaders because of their high level of humanity. He stressed the need to combine modern education with learning that strengthens human values.

Bhagwat said India should not aim only to become a military or economic power but should regain its place as a ‘Vishwaguru’ through human values and knowledge.

IILM Chairman Anil Rai delivered the introductory address at the programme.
