External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday met Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti in New Delhi and discussed the safety and security of commercial shipping, mining, health, agriculture, water and training.
Jaishankar congratulated Nyanti on the inauguration of Liberia’s new Embassy in New Delhi. Their discussions also covered reforms to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), with both sides focusing on strengthening South-South cooperation.
Nyanti arrived in India earlier on Thursday. The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed her visit as an opportunity to further strengthen ties between India and Liberia.
Jaishankar had earlier on Tuesday met a parliamentary delegation from Liberia visiting India under an IBSA-funded peer-learning programme.
The discussions covered development initiatives and India’s experience with schemes including Jan-Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Yojana, SVANidhi, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana and Mission Amrit Sarovar.
The delegation comprised members of the Liberian Senate, the House of Representatives and the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia. It was led by Ellen-Attoh Wreh and included representatives from UN Women.
The delegation also met Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Liberian delegation is visiting India from August 10 to 15 as part of a South-South Peer Learning Mission organised with UN Women’s support.
The programme is funded by India, Brazil and South Africa through the India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) Fund, administered by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides held substantive discussions on areas of shared interest and expressed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation within the framework of South-South cooperation.
