The Directorate of Health Services, Ladakh, proudly announced that Dr Motup Angmo, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Sonam Norboo Memorial (SNM) Hospital, Leh, has been awarded the Dr Sharat Chandra Das Endowment ACOIN Award 2024 by the Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACOIN).
This distinguished honour acknowledges her unwavering commitment, dedication, and excellence in delivering community-based eye care services across the Indian subcontinent.
Since joining SNM Hospital in 2017, Dr Angmo has become an indispensable part of Ladakh’s healthcare framework.
From 2018 onwards, she has managed the Ophthalmology Department single-handedly—overseeing both outpatient and inpatient care, performing a broad range of extraocular and intraocular surgeries, and providing intravitreal injections for retinal diseases.
For more than six years, she has been available 24/7 to attend to ophthalmic emergencies, demonstrating extraordinary commitment by visiting her home in Nubra Valley only twice a year.
Dr Angmo’s vision for equitable healthcare extends far beyond the hospital walls.
She has conducted numerous outreach and school screening camps across the remote regions of Changthang, Nubra, Sham, and Kargil, ensuring that quality eye care reaches Ladakh’s farthest settlements.
Her initiatives have played a crucial role in the early detection and treatment of preventable blindness among underserved populations.
In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr Angmo has made notable contributions to capacity building within the health sector.
She has actively trained ophthalmic assistants, nursing staff, and AMT students, helping develop a skilled local workforce capable of sustaining quality eye care in Ladakh.
Although Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, selected her as an Assistant Professor, Dr Angmo chose to remain in Ladakh and continues to serve as the region’s only ophthalmologist.
Her decision reflects deep compassion and a profound sense of duty towards her community.
Over her tenure, she has performed more than 3,000 surgeries—dramatically improving eye health outcomes in the region.
Congratulating her on this national recognition, Dr Tashi Thinlas, Director of Health Services, Ladakh, said, “Dr Motup Angmo’s dedication and professionalism have set a benchmark for community healthcare. Her efforts have brought world-class eye care to Ladakh’s remotest areas.”
Dr Angmo’s journey stands as an inspiring example of service, resilience, and excellence in medicine—reflecting Ladakh’s growing contribution to India’s healthcare landscape.
