Dr Dinesh Sharma Highlights Hindi’s Growing Role At National Language Conference In Gandhinagar

Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dr Dinesh Sharma has stated that since 2014, India has entered a new era of strengthening Hindi and Indian languages.

Speaking at the Hindi Diwas 2025 celebrations and the fifth All India Rajbhasha Conference at the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Dr Sharma remarked that Hindi and regional languages are progressing as companions.

He noted that in a multilingual country like India, Hindi now serves as the primary language for around 44 per cent of the population. He added that this is due to its ability to assimilate regional tongues.

Dr Sharma highlighted that Hindi today extends beyond India’s borders, reflecting its growing acceptance worldwide.

He reminded the audience that India once witnessed disputes over language and borders after independence. He added that the present environment now fosters respect for all Indian languages.

Calling language ‘the soul of an individual’s life’, he emphasised its ability to open the doors to progress.

Government Initiatives to Elevate Indian Languages

He underscored how the Modi government has launched new initiatives to enhance and respect Indian languages. These include offering medical and engineering education in Hindi and regional languages, traditionally dominated by English.

Dr Sharma credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their ongoing contributions to Hindi’s rise, while also praising leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel for their historic efforts in promoting the language.

He further noted that Hindi now accounts for 65 per cent of the Union government’s work, and the Ministry of Home Affairs operates almost entirely in the language.

Highlighting the integration between Hindi and other Indian languages, Dr Sharma spoke of how Tamil, Bangla and Hindi speakers increasingly interact across states. He said this growing interaction is creating new cultural connections.

He explained that India has included 22 languages in the Eighth Schedule and given 11 languages classical status, reflecting a commitment to linguistic diversity.

Moving beyond language policy, Dr Sharma shared personal reflections on life’s challenges.

He observed that people often think only of the future and forget to enjoy the present, emphasising that wealth alone does not guarantee happiness, but humanity does.

Quoting poet Neeraj, he encouraged the audience to pursue good deeds and a pure heart.

The conference concluded with honours for Hindi officers, scholars and contributors from across the country.

Union Minister Arjun Meghwal and scientist Anand Ranganathan also addressed the gathering, alongside senior officials of the Department of Official Language.

Participants from various institutions congratulated organisers on the successful event, underscoring Hindi Diwas 2025 as a landmark celebration of India’s linguistic heritage.
