Dharavi Redevelopment Gains Pace As BMC Issues Relocation Notices In Shahunagar

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project has taken a significant step towards implementation, with the BMC issuing notices to residents of Shahunagar to vacate their homes for redevelopment activities.

The initiative follows similar notices issued last month to families residing in Sector 6.

Authorities said the relocation process is intended to free up land and enable construction work to begin at a faster pace, helping deliver permanent rehabilitation homes to residents as early as possible.

The latest development reflects the Maharashtra Government’s commitment to moving the ambitious redevelopment scheme from the planning stage to active execution.

The move comes shortly after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed officials to make 10,000 homes available by 2028.

Approximately 900 BMC tenant families living in Shahunagar will be required to relocate temporarily during the redevelopment period.

Officials stated that residents who choose transit accommodation will be allotted homes in MHADA buildings. These units are located in Sector 5 of Dharavi.

Around 500 units have already been prepared for relocation, while other families may choose rented accommodation.

Rent Support and Relocation Benefits

Under the rehabilitation package, households occupying units of up to 275 sq ft will receive a monthly rent allowance of ₹22,000, while residents of 375 sq ft homes will receive ₹30,000 per month.

The allowance will increase by five per cent annually. Every family will receive a one-time shifting assistance payment of ₹15,000.

Authorities confirmed that agreements outlining relocation terms and rehabilitation entitlements will be signed before residents vacate their homes.

Shahunagar families will receive permanent homes within the same locality within five years of the commencement certificate being issued.

Residents will receive new homes with a minimum carpet area of 500 sq ft. They will be allotted homes measuring 1.35 times the size of their existing residence, whichever is larger.

Officials said authorities are making every effort to ensure a smooth and resident-friendly relocation process. They added that the initiative is designed to speed up construction and facilitate the timely delivery of permanent rehabilitation and renewal housing.
