Dharampuri Srinivas: Former Minister And Congress Leader, Passes Away

Dharampuri Srinivas, a senior Congress leader and former member of the Rajya Sabha, passed away early on Saturday in this city following a protracted illness.

Around three in the morning, family sources said that Srinivas, 76, who led the Congress and had a ministerial position in the then-undivided state of Andhra Pradesh, passed away at home.

Following a brain stroke, the senior leader had not been in good health for a few years.

DS, as he is commonly called, is survived by his wife and two sons. While his older son, Dharampuri Sanjay, was Nizamabad’s mayor, his younger son, Dharampuri Arvind, is a BJP MP from Nizamabad.

In 2004 the Congress came back to power in an undivided Andhra Pradesh, led by Srinivas.

In addition to serving as a Minister in the Cabinet of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, he led the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee twice.

After Talangana Rashtra Samithi (now Bharat Rashtra Samithi) won the first administration in the newly constituted Telangana state in 2014. Dharampuri Srinivas shifted his allegiance to BRS. In 2016, the government appointed him as a special advisor. Later he became a member of the Rajya Sabha.

After joining the Congress in 1989, Srinivas reached to the Assembly in 1989 from the Nizamabad Urban constituency, where he later rose to the rank of Minister. In 1999 and 2004, he became M

From 1989 to 1994, he held the positions of Minister for Rural Development, Information, and Public Relations; from 2004 to 2008, he was Minister for Higher Education and Urban Land Ceiling.

He led Congress both in 2004 when it came to power and again in 2009 when it stayed in power. Nevertheless, in 2009, he lost in his Assembly constituency.

From 2013 to 2015, Srinivas held the position of Member of Legislative Council.
