The NSA detention of a Sikh radical Amritpal Singh and nine others extended for a year. He is in jail for a year as he was detained in March last year.
The newly elected MP is to serve one more year in the jail.
The detention of Amritpal Singh, leader of ‘Waris Punjab De’, and three associates were supposed was set to expire on July 24, while the NSA detention for six other associates was to end on June 18.
He won the Khadoor Sahib seat in his first election, defeating Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira by 1,97,120 votes.
Supporters see him as a new-generation Sikh leader, inspired by the late Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Bhindranwale was killed in the Indian Army’s Operation Blue Star in 1984. He also considers the late separatist an “inspiration” for him.
