The death of a 10-year-old girl following an alleged incident of punishment at a school in East Delhi has brought renewed attention to the safety of children in educational institutions.
According to police, the girl reportedly became unwell after allegedly being reprimanded and punished for not carrying a book to school.
Authorities said the child had epilepsy and was taken home after her condition deteriorated.
Police officials said they received information from a relative of the girl, who alleged that she had been scolded and beaten before falling sick.
A preliminary inquiry reportedly indicated that the girl had attended school despite being unwell on July 22.
Police sources said the child died on August 27, while her last rites were conducted on the same day.
No case had been registered at the time of the report, with authorities continuing to examine the family’s allegations.
The Delhi government has directed officials to take appropriate action concerning the child’s safety and the allegations of mistreatment.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said the teacher concerned had been transferred while the inquiry remained underway. He stated that the move was intended to ensure an impartial investigation without interference.
The Minister said strict action would follow if the inquiry established negligence, dereliction of duty or other irregularities.
The incident highlights why parents need to remain attentive to changes in their children’s behaviour, health and experiences at school.
Children may sometimes hesitate to speak about distressing incidents, making communication between parents and schools particularly important.
Schools, administrators and authorities must ensure that complaints involving children are taken seriously and investigated promptly.
Parental vigilance, responsible school administration and decisive government action are essential to creating an environment where every child can learn safely and without fear.
