Delhi Police–Himachal Police Standoff Ends After Legal Battle In Shimla

A confrontation between Delhi Police and Himachal Pradesh Police, which began on Saturday, ended on Thursday morning after a dramatic legal and administrative exchange.

A Special Cell team of Delhi Police left Shimla with three Congress youth workers accused of creating a disturbance at an AI Summit.

The accused are scheduled to be produced before the Patiala House Court in Delhi.

The episode triggered significant administrative and political ripples, highlighting tensions between the two state agencies.

The dispute began when a Delhi Police team in plain clothes detained three Congress workers in Rohru, Shimla, without informing the Himachal Police.

Calling it an ‘abduction’, Himachal Police intercepted the vehicles at Shoghi and Dharampur, detained around 20 personnel, registered an FIR and seized their vehicles, even closing court gates as tensions rose.

Legal proceedings intensified after midnight on Wednesday.

At around 1:00 AM, Delhi Police produced the accused before ACJM-II Ekansh Kapil, who granted transit remand after lengthy arguments.

Despite the order, Himachal Police allegedly tried to halt the team by issuing a fresh FIR.

Sources link the standoff to an earlier incident at Himachal Bhawan in Delhi, where Delhi Police reportedly opened rooms at 3:00 AM, drawing objections from the state government.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu voiced displeasure.

ACP Rahul Vikram claimed unlawful detention and said Himachal Police lacked authority to seize official vehicles or evidence.

Delhi Police plans to challenge the FIR. The episode has taken on political overtones, reflecting tensions between the Union Home Ministry and the Congress-led Himachal government.
