A torrential downpour swept across Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening, claiming seven lives and injuring three others as it caused widespread disruption throughout the region.
The relentless rainfall led to extensive waterlogging across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad, severely affecting daily life.
In the national capital, a tragic house collapse resulted in one fatality and two injuries.
In the Uttar Pradesh locality of Khoda, severe waterlogging swept a mother and daughter into an open sewer, resulting in their deaths.
Meanwhile, two individuals perished in Gautam Buddha Nagar District when a wall collapsed under the weight of the rainwater.
Gurugram faced a dire situation when live wires exposed through the waterlogged streets electrocuted three residents.
Additionally, Faridabad reported a drowning incident where one person lost their life due to flooding.
In Greater Noida, the evening’s deluge caused the roof of a local gym to cave in, injuring two individuals. Emergency services, along with local residents, conducted a rescue operation to aid the trapped individuals.
The severe weather also caused significant traffic disruptions, leaving office-goers stranded for hours.
An office worker from Noida shared, “I live in Sector 50 and work in Sector 16. The roads in Sector 16 were inundated, making it nearly impossible to reach my parked car. My usual 20-minute commute turned into a grueling hour-long ordeal, and at one point, I feared my car might stall and leave me stranded.”
The Delhi Police reported receiving 2,945 calls related to traffic jams, 127 calls concerning waterlogging, 27 reports of house collapses, and 50 complaints about fallen trees.
Weather disruptions forced ten flights scheduled for Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport to divert: eight to Jaipur and two to Lucknow.
