Delhi Police have apprehended Rahul Meena in connection with the killing of a 22-year-old woman in southeast Delhi, officials said on Thursday.
The victim, a UPSC aspirant and daughter of an IRS officer, was found dead inside her Kailash Hills residence on Wednesday morning. Investigators said she was sexually assaulted and strangled using a phone charger.
Police said the breakthrough came from a digital trail built around three elements: a stolen mobile device, internet usage at a hotel, and social media communication. These clues helped officers trace the accused, who had attempted to avoid detection.
During the probe, teams analysed CCTV footage from multiple locations and found that the accused had deliberately avoided using his personal phone. Instead, he used a handset stolen earlier in Alwar during a harassment incident.
Investigators later discovered that Meena had checked into a hotel in Dwarka, where he accessed the internet through Wi-Fi. While there, he stayed in contact with a relative based in Gurugram via Instagram.
Officials said Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDR) and technical surveillance used to narrow down his location. Inputs gathered from questioning the relative further strengthened the lead.
According to police, Meena travelled from Alwar to Delhi on the day of the incident. He allegedly sold a mobile phone for Rs 10,000 and hired a vehicle for Rs 6,000 before abandoning the driver on reaching the city and heading towards the victim’s home.
CCTV footage showed him entering the locality around 6:30 AM and going inside the house minutes later. He left the premises at approximately 7:20 AM.
Police said the accused was aware of the family’s daily routine, which he allegedly used to plan the crime.
After the incident, Meena changed clothes and fled with around Rs 2.5 lakh in cash. He was eventually located and arrested from the Dwarka hotel where he had been staying.
Police have registered charges of sexual assault, murder, and robbery, and further investigation is in progress.
