Delhi Municipal Corporation Cracks Down On Illegal Coaching Centres Following Tragic Flooding Incident

In response to a devastating incident that claimed the lives of three UPSC aspirants, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has moved decisively to address illegal coaching centres in Old Rajinder Nagar.

Late on Sunday, the MCD took action by sealing 13 coaching centres operating without proper authorization.

The centres affected include well-known institutions such as IAS Gurukul, Chahal Academy, Plutus Academy, Easy for IAS, and others.

MCD Mayor Shaili Oberoi directed the closures, citing violations of regulations, particularly the illegal use of basements.

The Mayor’s office reported that coaching centres operated in basements, violating rules. They took immediate action and posted notices at each location.

The crackdown follows a tragic incident at Rau’s IAS Study Circle, where a sudden influx of water into an illegally converted basement library resulted in the deaths of Tania Soni, Shreya Yadav, both 25, and Navin Delvin, 28.

The incident highlighted severe safety breaches and regulatory violations.

In response to the incident, the MCD has announced plans to inspect other coaching centres across Delhi.

The focus will be on identifying similar violations and ensuring adherence to building codes. Centres found in breach of regulations will face closure.

The MCD’s actions have sparked significant political backlash.

Opposition parties have criticized both the MCD and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for allowing such centres to operate without proper oversight and for failing to maintain infrastructure, specifically citing inadequate drainage management that exacerbated the flooding.

The municipal corporation faces scrutiny for its role in preventing such incidents and for its broader management of urban infrastructure in the lead-up to the monsoon season.
