Delhi High Court
The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a petition filed by the Congress Party regarding an ongoing income tax dispute on March 20. The case revolves around the Income Tax Department’s decision to initiate a three-year assessment proceeding against the political party.
This development comes after the Income Tax Department took legal action against the Congress Party, contesting an earlier order to commence assessment proceedings. The High Court had previously declined to intervene in the Income Tax Department’s actions concerning the Congress Party’s bank accounts.
The dispute stems from alleged irregularities in the Congress Party’s tax returns, with the Income Tax Department imposing a hefty fine of Rs 210 crore. In response, the Congress Party challenged this decision by filing an appeal with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal.
However, on March 8, the Tribunal refused to grant a stay on the Income Tax Department’s actions, prompting the Congress Party to escalate the matter to the Delhi High Court.

The outcome of this legal battle could have significant implications for both the Congress Party and the Income Tax Department. The Congress Party’s finances and its ability to operate effectively could be affected by the hefty fine imposed by the tax authorities. On the other hand, the Income Tax Department’s actions will be scrutinized by the judiciary to ensure adherence to legal procedures and fairness.
The March 20 hearing at the Delhi High Court will be closely watched by political observers and legal experts alike, as it could provide clarity on the legality of the Income Tax Department’s actions and the Congress Party’s recourse in addressing alleged tax irregularities.
