Delhi High Court Sentences Lawyer To Four Months For Criminal Contempt

The Delhi High Court has sentenced a lawyer to four months in prison for criminal contempt. The lawyer was found guilty of making offensive remarks about judges and filing numerous baseless complaints against them and police officers. The division bench, consisting of Justices Pratibha M Singh and Amit Sharma, noted in its November 6 order that the lawyer showed no remorse or apology for his actions.

Repeated Baseless Complaints

The Court observed that the lawyer filed 30 to 40 complaints against judicial and police officers. It stated that his conduct was aimed at defaming the judiciary and lowering its authority. Despite being given chances in earlier hearings, the lawyer continued his allegations without any signs of regret.

The Court highlighted that multiple judicial bodies had addressed his complaints. The bench criticized the lawyer’s behavior, calling his complaints frivolous and unfounded.

Refusal to Suspend Sentence

During the sentencing, the lawyer requested a suspension of his sentence to appeal to the Supreme Court. However, the Court refused, citing his ongoing defamatory campaign against the judiciary. The bench noted that his submissions during the contempt proceedings were made in a “brazen manner.”

The Court further noted that the lawyer had been offered counsel but chose to argue his case personally. However, if he now wishes, the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee will provide him legal assistance.
