Delhi Government Launches 1,111 GPS-Enabled Water Tankers To Combat Summer Shortages

In a significant step to address the capital’s water demand during the scorching summer months, the Delhi government will roll out 1,111 GPS-enabled water tankers from Sunday.

The initiative, designed to enhance supply in areas with inadequate or no piped water access, will be officially flagged off at Nirankari Ground in Burari.

Delhi Water Minister Inspects Preparations

Early on Friday, Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma conducted an on-site inspection at the Nirankari Ground ahead of the launch.

While announcing the deployment, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparent and timely water delivery.

“We are working with utmost dedication to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of water for all on time,” Verma stated. “This initiative is not just about delivering water, but about bringing accountability, transparency, and dignity to every citizen who depends on us for this service,” he added.

BJP Leaders Attend Flag-Off Ceremony

Several senior BJP leaders, including MPs and MLAs, gathered at the venue to mark the occasion.

Delhi BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat highlighted the importance of these tankers during extreme summers.

“Tankers were the most important thing for the people of Delhi during the scorching summers. Now, equipped with GPS trackers, they will ensure complete transparency and accountability,” Sehrawat told IANS.

Political Reactions And Criticism Of Past Governance

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP MP Yogender Chandolia used the occasion to criticise the previous Aam Aadmi Party-led government, accusing it of facilitating a ‘tanker mafia’ that profited by misusing public resources.

“Today is a historic day for Delhi. Earlier, the corrupt government of Kejriwal made the people suffer by enabling tanker mafias. They stole water and sold it at high prices. With GPS now in place, this won’t be possible,” he asserted.

Echoing this sentiment, BJP MLA Ravinder Negi said the new system would clamp down on illegal practices and ensure citizens receive the water they deserve.

Command Centre Set Up To Monitor Deliveries

To maintain oversight, the Delhi Jal Board has established a high-tech Command Centre at the Nirankari Ground.

From this facility, officials will track each tanker’s location, speed, and delivery time in real time, ensuring they reach their designated areas efficiently.

The introduction of GPS tracking is expected to significantly curb water theft, misuse, and inequitable distribution, which have long plagued the city’s supply system.

A Step Towards Modernising Delhi’s Water Infrastructure

This rollout forms part of the Delhi Jal Board’s larger strategy to modernise water distribution across the city.

By combining improved logistics with digital monitoring, the government aims to meet rising summer demand while promoting fairness and transparency in water access.

With extreme temperatures expected in the coming weeks, the initiative comes as a timely intervention, one that could set a precedent for other Indian cities grappling with similar urban water challenges.
