Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has petitioned the Supreme Court for a 7-day extension of his interim bail to undergo crucial medical examinations, including a PET-CT scan.
The move comes amidst his ongoing legal battle related to the alleged excise policy scam case.
The apex court granted CM Kejriwal interim bail until 1 June, directing him to surrender on 2 June in connection with the money laundering case associated with the aforementioned scam.
However, citing deteriorating health conditions, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emphasized the urgency of medical assessments for Kejriwal.
According to AAP sources, Kejriwal’s health has significantly declined since his arrest in the alleged Delhi excise scam.
Reports suggest that he has shed 7 kg in weight post-arrest, with abnormally high ketone levels indicating a potentially serious medical condition.
The party has emphasized the necessity of comprehensive medical tests for the CM, necessitating a 7 day extension of his interim bail.
On 17 May, the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta of the Supreme Court heard the matter and reserved its verdict on Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest and subsequent remand by the federal anti-money laundering agency.
While the court suggested that Kejriwal could seek regular bail from the trial court despite the pending judgment, it reiterated that its initial order clearly delineated the timeline for his release and surrender, without making any exceptions.
In a parallel development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has sought a 14 day extension of judicial custody for Kejriwal post the expiry of the Supreme Court’s interim bail order on 2 June.
The legal proceedings surrounding Kejriwal’s case continue to attract significant attention, both politically and legally, amid ongoing controversies.
