Delhi Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises To 5, 11 Injured In Satya Niketan

The death toll in the Satya Niketan building collapse in South Delhi rose to five on Sunday, while 11 people sustained injuries in the incident.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said 10 patients were brought to the JPN Apex Trauma Centre following the collapse. Four were declared dead on arrival, while another patient in critical condition later succumbed to their injuries.

Three patients remain admitted and are receiving treatment. One patient underwent surgery for a limb injury, while another sustained minor injuries and was discharged after observation.

Police have registered a case at South Campus police station against the alleged owner, Hariram, and others in connection with the collapse.

Incident Details

The incident occurred around 01:30 PM, with most of the victims reportedly being students living as paying guests in the building.

The property had rooms to accommodate around 40 people, while police said the owner lives in Gurugram.

Delhi Police said the 40-50-year-old building had a basement and five upper floors and was being used as PG accommodation. Several residents were studying at Delhi University’s South Campus in Dhaula Kuan.

Repair work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed.

Police indicated that heavy rain could have contributed to the incident.

Delhi Police, NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, DDMA, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence teams took part in the rescue operation.

First responders rescued 11 people from the debris using gas cutters and JCB machines to remove iron beams and rubble.

The injured were shifted to AIIMS, where Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met them and enquired about their condition.

CM Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu and Mayor Pravesh Wahi visited the collapse site and monitored the rescue operation.

Currently at the incident site in Satya Niketan, RK Puram, along with all concerned authorities, closely monitoring the rescue operation.

Teams arranged lighting to continue the operation after dark and kept oxygen cylinders ready for rescued victims.
