A sense of shock spread across the country on Monday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over a devastating road accident in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district, where at least 12 people lost their lives, and around 40 others were injured.
Through a message released by the Prime Minister’s Office on a social media platform, he conveyed his condolences to the affected families and outlined financial support for those impacted.
Taking to X, the Prime Minister’s Office posted, “The loss of lives due to a mishap in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon.”
“An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi,” the post further read.
The crash unfolded on Sunday evening near Kummangudi, close to Kundrakkudi. Two state-run buses collided head-on along a narrow section of road.
Officials, however, reported that the force of the collision was extremely intense. It left several passengers dead instantly, while others were trapped inside the crushed buses.
Residents in the area quickly gathered at the scene to help with rescue efforts.
Working alongside the police, they assisted survivors and helped move those injured to nearby hospitals. Emergency personnel remained on duty late into the night as casualty numbers rose.
An investigation has been initiated to determine what caused the crash.
Early indications suggest the possibility of overspeeding, poor visibility, or driver exhaustion. Authorities say the exact cause will be established after a full inquiry.
On Monday morning, police and transport officials examined the site, checking the condition of the road and collecting forensic evidence.
Those injured are being treated in hospitals in Sivaganga and Karaikudi, where medical teams are dealing with multiple cases of serious injuries, including fractures and head trauma.
Several passengers are in critical condition, prompting doctors to prepare additional emergency support.
The accident has, however, drawn widespread condolences from political leaders and community representatives.
As medical teams continue their work, the state government is coordinating with district officials to ensure that affected families receive all necessary assistance.
