Deep Depression Crosses Andhra Coast; Heavy Rainfall And Strong Winds Hit Andhra Pradesh, Odisha

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast near Kalingapatnam between 11 PM on September 23 and 1 AM on September 24, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas to the eastern coast.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), winds of 55–65 kmph were recorded during the crossing, with gusts reaching up to 75 kmph.

Andhra Pradesh and Odisha remain the major affected states, with authorities closely monitoring vulnerable areas for flooding, waterlogging and other weather-related disruptions.

In Andhra Pradesh, the system has triggered widespread rainfall across several coastal districts.

Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas have reported heavy showers, while continuous rainfall has caused waterlogging in parts of Vijayawada.

Several schools have remained closed as local authorities assess conditions and take precautionary measures.

Odisha has experienced intense rainfall, particularly across southern and coastal districts.

The IMD has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in both north and south Odisha.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as the risk of flooding and waterlogging persists.

Ports along the coast have maintained cautionary signals amid rough to high sea conditions.

In Puri district, authorities have restricted sea bathing as a precautionary measure. They have warned residents and tourists to stay out of the sea.

As of Thursday morning, the deep depression lay over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha. It was around 70 km west-northwest of Kalingapatnam and 80 km south-southeast of Rayagada.

The IMD expects the system to move north-northwestwards. It is likely to weaken into a depression by Thursday evening.

Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand may receive heavy rainfall. West Bengal and other parts of eastern India could see further showers under the system’s influence.
