Cybercrime A Major Global Threat, Says Amit Shah Ahead Of National Conference

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said cybercrime poses a serious global challenge as he prepares to address a national conference focused on tackling cyber-enabled fraud and dismantling its supporting ecosystem.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is organising the two-day conference in New Delhi to strengthen India’s cybercrime response framework.

Taking to X, Shah posted, “Cybercrime is a major threat to the world today. Our government is resolved to secure citizens from it. Today, will address the National Conference on ‘Tackling Cyber-Enabled Frauds & Dismantling the Ecosystem’ organized by CBI to bolster India’s cybercrime combat prowess.”

Earlier, the CBI shared a post confirming that the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation will deliver the keynote address at the conference.

During the event, Shah will preside over an investiture ceremony for CBI officers, inaugurate the agency’s new Cybercrime Branch, and launch the S4C Dashboard of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The CBI is conducting the conference in collaboration with the I4C.

CBI’s Expanding Cybercrime Role

The CBI has been probing cybercrime cases since 2000 and has steadily upgraded its technological and investigative capabilities.

In 2022, it set up a dedicated Cybercrime Investigation Division to enhance its specialised response.

The agency acts as the nodal body for cybercrime cases affecting the Central government, covering both cyber-dependent crimes and cyber-enabled frauds.

The conference comes amid India’s rapid digital expansion under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has improved access to banking and governance but also created new vulnerabilities exploited by organised cybercriminal networks.

Officials said the discussions will focus on understanding emerging fraud trends and the three key pillars of the cyber-fraud ecosystem: financial, telecom, and human.

The event will also explore the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics, faster fraud reporting, real-time fund tracking, evidence preservation and improved victim protection, with participation from law enforcement agencies, regulators, banks, telecom providers, technology platforms and international experts.
