Crack In Opposition Unity Widens As AAP Extends ‘In-Principle’ Support To Uniform Civil Code

While the pitch for Uniform Civil Code (UCC) faces strong opposition from different opposition parties, Aam Aadmi Party stands as an exception. The Party – in power in Delhi and Punjab gave “in-principle support” to Uniform Civil Code. As APP extends support to the most controversial political agenda, they said the code should be brought in to achieve a consensus following considerable stakeholder outreach.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While addressing worker’s meet in Bhopal pitched the idea of implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. As soon as the opposition parties got to know about the idea, opposing statements started showering in.

The divided Opposition Unity

Just a few days ago, Patna held a meeting for opposition unity in which around 16 parties came together to discuss the Lok Sabha elections of 2024. But post meeting, it came out that Congress and AAP Party are not on the same page regarding the Delhi ordinance. Hence, Arvind Kejriwal – CM of Delhi and AAP Chief is not taking part in any moves from the ‘Unity’. Also, he said that he won’t be the part of the meeting if Congress stays in.

AAP national general secretary (organization) Sandeep Pathak said the Centre should hold extensive consultations on UCC with all stakeholders, including political parties and non-political entities,    “The AAP supports UCC in principle. Article 44 (of the Constitution) also supports it,” said Pathak.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remarked that attempts are being made by political opponents to provide communal colour if the Centre talks about implementing the UCC, which sparked a political discussion.

He said politics should not be done by dividing society but should be done by taking the society and country together. “What we are going to do has been written in the Indian Constitution. We are going to fulfill the same promise. Isn’t there one country, one legislation?” the senior BJP leader said addressing a rally in Jodhpur.

Also, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi – BJP leader and former Union Minister took a jibe at opposition parties and said that its high time to free UCC from these “communal crafters” as it is not for any particular community but for the entire society.
