NDA Vice Presidential nominee CP Radhakrishnan visited the revered Ram Temple on Lodhi Road, New Delhi, on Tuesday morning to offer prayers ahead of the high-stakes Vice Presidential election.
He visited just hours before polling began, marking a moment of spiritual reflection amid political anticipation.
Radhakrishnan, who currently serves as the Governor of Maharashtra, is contesting against B Sudershan Reddy, a retired Supreme Court judge and the official candidate of the INDIA bloc.
Addressing the media after his temple visit, he stated, “We are all one, we will remain one. We want India to become a ‘Viksit Bharat’, and this victory will contribute to that vision. It will be a win for Indian nationalism.”
The Vice Presidential post holds considerable political significance, as the elected candidate also assumes the role of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. This makes the position crucial in the legislative and parliamentary process.
The post became vacant on 21 July, when Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, citing health concerns on the first day of the monsoon session.
Voting is taking place at the New Parliament Building from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the counting scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to cast the first vote. Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ram Mohan Naidu, along with Shiv Sena MP Dr Shrikant Shinde, will serve as official election agents.
The electoral college consists of 781 members—542 from the Lok Sabha and 239 from the Rajya Sabha, including 12 nominated members.
With six vacancies, the majority required to win stands at 391 votes. All votes carry equal weight and are cast via secret ballot, as per established parliamentary protocol.
While the NDA holds a numerical advantage, political analysts are closely watching for any cross-voting that could affect the outcome.
Officials will declare the results later this evening.
As the country awaits the final outcome, the Vice Presidential election is shaping up to be a pivotal moment.
Radhakrishnan’s temple visit and confident remarks underscore the ideological stakes for the NDA, positioning the contest not just as a political battle but as part of a larger national narrative.
