Could A Walk Through Rainwater Make You Seriously Ill? BMC Issues Leptospirosis Alert

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to remain vigilant against leptospirosis during the ongoing monsoon, warning that exposure to stagnant rainwater or mud can significantly increase the risk of infection.

The civic body said people with cuts, wounds or even minor abrasions face a greater chance of contracting the disease after walking through contaminated water.

The Public Health Department advised anyone exposed to stagnant rainwater or mud to consult a doctor immediately and take preventive medication within 24 to 72 hours, as recommended by medical professionals.

Mumbai has witnessed persistent heavy rainfall in recent days, causing widespread waterlogging across several areas and increasing the possibility of infection.

According to the BMC, rainwater mixed with contaminated mud may contain Leptospira bacteria, which enter the body through broken skin and cause leptospirosis.

The corporation warned that delayed diagnosis or treatment could make the disease life-threatening.

The civic body urged residents to visit Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Clinics, BMC dispensaries, municipal health centres and civic hospitals, where free medical consultations, health check-ups, preventive medicines and guidance are available. It also encouraged people to spread awareness among family members, friends and neighbours about early prevention and treatment.

The Public Health Department further advised citizens not to ignore fever during the monsoon, as it may indicate leptospirosis, dengue or malaria.

Residents should seek prompt medical care instead of self-medicating.

As a precaution, people with wounds should avoid walking through stagnant water. If unavoidable, they should wear rubber boots or protective footwear, wash their feet thoroughly with soap and clean water afterwards, and dry them properly to minimise infection risks.
