On Thursday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) uncovered a significant document revealing that former principal Sandip Ghosh authorized urgent renovation work at the crime scene just a day after authorities discovered the victim’s body in the tragic rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
Authorities discovered the victim’s body on the morning of 9 August in a seminar room at the hospital.
According to sources, the CBI has obtained a permission letter signed by Ghosh, dated 10 August, instructing the state Public Works Department (PWD) to undertake renovations in the area adjacent to the seminar hall, where the crime occurred.
Initially, officials believed that an administrative official at RG Kar had acted on Ghosh’s behalf to initiate the renovation work.
However, the newly revealed document suggests Ghosh’s direct involvement and urgency in the matter.
On the evening of 13 August, shortly after the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation from Kolkata Police, PWD staff attempted to commence renovation work.
The hospital’s student community immediately and vigorously protested the effort, halting the renovation.
The newly surfaced document now links Ghosh to both the ongoing rape and murder investigation and separate probes into financial irregularities at RG Kar.
Ghosh is currently in CBI custody facing allegations of financial misconduct.
Protests by medical professionals have intensified, with claims that the incident at RG Kar is part of a broader pattern of misconduct, suggesting that the victim’s death may have been connected to her knowledge of institutional corruption.
