Contaminated Water Triggers Deaths In The ‘Cleanest’ City: Bharat Express Exposes Bhagirathpura Tragedy

Deaths caused by drinking contaminated water in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, have shaken the entire state. In recent days, contamination in the local water supply triggered a severe outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea, resulting in the deaths of 24 people.

Several others remain hospitalised in critical condition. Bharat Express Group Editor Sudesh Tiwari examined the incident in detail, uncovering disturbing lapses in governance and civic management.

Towards the end of December 2025, residents of Bhagirathpura reported foul-smelling and visibly dirty water being supplied to their homes. Soon after, people began falling ill with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Hospitals in Indore witnessed an overwhelming influx of patients. Despite medical intervention, 24 people lost their lives. In one tragic case, a woman died while staying at her daughter’s house. The incident has become a major embarrassment for Indore, often celebrated as one of India’s cleanest cities.

A key revelation emerging from the investigation is that administrative negligence played a central role in the tragedy.

Urban Bodies Commissioner Sanket Bhondwe issued a letter from Bhopal, directing that no new construction work, tenders, or civic projects be undertaken until the new Standard of Rates (SOR) was finalised. This order stalled several essential works of the Indore Municipal Corporation, including repairs to ageing water pipelines and the fixing of leakages.

Senior journalist Rajesh stated that residents had complained about contaminated water supply nearly one and a half to two months before the outbreak, but no action was taken.

Officials Under Scrutiny, Political Fallout

Following the deaths, administrative reshuffles and political unrest ensued. Indore Municipal Commissioner Dilip Yadav was removed from his post, despite having served for only four to five months. Officials, including Rohit Sosoniya, were accused of delays and inaction.

The Congress party organised protests, while Rahul Gandhi visited Indore and staged a dharna. Both the High Court and the Supreme Court issued sharp remarks against the state government.

Sudesh Tiwari argued that while the Municipal Corporation is being blamed, the real responsibility also lies with senior officials in Bhopal who stalled critical works.

Questions have also been raised about Madhya Pradesh’s bureaucracy, with allegations that officers brought in from Delhi are being prioritised over experienced state service officials, leading to delays and inefficiency.

People are now demanding clean drinking water and justice for the victims. The health department has intensified surveys and advised residents to boil water before consumption.

Sudesh Tiwari emphasised that these deaths were not accidental but the result of negligence. He called for a thorough investigation and strict punishment for those responsible to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
