The Congress party confirmed on Friday that it will provide a letter of support to the National Conference (NC) by the evening, enabling the latter to stake its claim for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. The NC currently holds 42 seats in the 95-member Legislative Assembly.
JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra announced that Congress will hold a legislature party meeting to pass a resolution supporting the NC. The resolution will be sent to the party high command in Delhi for approval. “We have six members, and the high command will decide the coalition details,” Karra said. He added that Congress has no specific conditions for extending support to the NC at this time.
The NC legislature party, led by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, unanimously selected Omar Abdullah as the leader, authorizing him to stake the claim. The NC, with support from four independent candidates and AAP, has secured 48 seats, enough for a simple majority in the Assembly. The NC-Congress alliance had contested the election together, further strengthening their claim for government formation.
