The Congress party made a significant move today by unveiling its initial list of 33 candidates for the forthcoming Rajasthan assembly elections. Among the key nominations, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is set to contest from the Sardarpura constituency, while his former deputy, Sachin Pilot, will be the party’s candidate in Tonk.
The list also includes the prominent figure of Rajasthan Assembly Speaker C P Joshi, who will be running from his Nathdwara assembly seat, and the state unit president, Govind Singh Dotasra, who has been chosen as the candidate for Lachhmangarh.
These selections come after deliberations by the Congress’ state election committee in their latest meeting, where they not only finalized candidate names but also discussed potential election strategies in preparation for the crucial November 25 polls.
The Rajasthan elections hold immense significance for the Congress, as they aspire to break the state’s historical pattern of the incumbent party being routinely voted out of power. However, this electoral ambition is somewhat overshadowed by the ongoing disagreement between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot, leading to a challenging scenario that necessitates the party to address its leadership issues.
Encouragingly, there are signs of reconciliation between the two prominent leaders. Both Gehlot and Pilot have engaged in extensive discussions with senior party leaders in Delhi, hinting at a possible resolution of their differences.
This development in Rajasthan mirrors a recent success story in Karnataka, where Congress managed to resolve leadership issues between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, who shared somewhat similar equations. In a statement, Sachin Pilot emphasized the party’s commitment to fight the assembly elections unitedly, with the Chief Minister being decided by legislators and the party’s leadership once they secure the electoral mandate.
