Congress Accuses PM Modi’s Kanyakumari Retreat Of Violating Poll Code, Appeals To Election Commission

A day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi retreats to Kanyakumari for a three-day meditation break, the Congress approached the Election Commission on Wednesday, claiming the PM’s move violates the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi reported that they informed the Election Commission about the issue, emphasizing that during the 48-hour silence period before the election, no one should be allowed to campaign, either directly or indirectly.

Singhvi clarified that the party does not oppose any leader’s personal activities but argued that the PM’s meditation retreat, set to begin during the silence period from 7 AM on May 30 until June 1, constitutes a violation of the MCC. He described the retreat as a tactic for continued campaigning or maintaining media attention.

The Congress has requested the Election Commission to either direct the PM to postpone his vow of silence until the evening of June 1 or, if it commences as planned, to ensure the media does not broadcast it.

This is not the first instance of Modi’s religious visits during critical electoral periods; in 2019, he visited the Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines just before the results of that year’s Lok Sabha elections, which secured him a second consecutive term.

Modi, a senior BJP leader and former Gujarat chief minister, is seeking a third consecutive win from the Varanasi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which will vote in the final phase on Saturday. The results of the Lok Sabha elections are expected on June 4.
