Congress 2024 Lok Sabha Manifesto: Key Promises and Highlights Revealed

The Congress party unveiled its manifesto, dubbed ‘Nyay Patra,’ for the forthcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections on April 5, marking a significant moment in the political landscape. Key party figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, and P Chidambaram were among those present during the highly anticipated release event.

Under the overarching theme of ‘Paanch Nyay’ (Five Justices) and ‘Pachees Guarantee’ (Twenty-Five Guarantees), the manifesto outlined the party’s vision and commitments. One of the pivotal announcements was the intention to conduct a nationwide socio-economic and caste census, a move aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of societal dynamics.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram set the tone for the event by highlighting the party’s perspective on the current state of affairs in India under the BJP’s governance. He lamented the erosion of democracy and institutions, attributing it to the ruling party’s policies. Chidambaram also underscored the contrast in economic growth rates, citing a decline from the UPA era to around 5.8% under Modi’s rule.

The manifesto outlined several key promises and initiatives, including:

– Congress will conduct a nationwide socio-economic and caste census, said the manifesto.

– A commitment to pass a constitutional amendment to raise the 50% cap on reservations for SC, ST, and OBC communities.

-General election presents an opportunity to radically change the style of governance that has been in evidence over the past decade, said the manifesto.

Congress’ manifesto promised to fill nearly 30 lakh vacancies in sanctioned posts at various levels in the central government.

– Implementation of the Rajasthan model of cashless insurance for universal healthcare, providing coverage of up to Rs 25 lakh.

– Introduction of a ‘right to employment’ for the youth, emphasizing job creation and opportunities.

– Guaranteeing ten per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) across all castes and communities.

– Reversal of the Agnipath program and a pledge to restore normal recruitment in the Armed Forces.

– Ensuring apprenticeship opportunities for diploma holders and graduates below the age of 25 through a new Apprenticeship Act.
