Manmohan Singh Letter Head Case: The case of drafting a letter on fictitious letterhead to the then-prime minister Manmohan Singh in 2009 will be heard by Rouse Avenue Court on October 26. Ajay Maken, the former minister of state for home affairs, had filed a case with the CBI to look into this. The CBI is looking into this issue on its own. Congressman Jagdish Tytler has also been charged in this matter, but let us clarify what this case is about first.
Actually, this issue dates back to 2009. which the CBI is looking into. According to allegations, Tytler and arms dealer Abhishek Verma wrote a letter to then-prime minister Manmohan Singh asking for a relaxation of visa requirements for employees of a Chinese telecom business. They purportedly used the fictitious letterhead of then-minister of state for home affairs, Ajay Maken. A complaint was filed against them both under the Anti-Corruption Act’s provisions pertaining to criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery.
Remarkably, a case was filed against the two defendants under the Anti-Corruption Act’s provisions pertaining to forgery, deception, and criminal conspiracy as soon as this issue surfaced. Tytler filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the lower court’s judgment to draw charges against him following the hearing in this matter.
But his plea was turned down. He then made an application to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court denied the petition in 2018 and ordered that the trial be finished in a year. The court extended the deadline in September of last year, but this matter will now be reopened.
