On Friday, the Calcutta High Court issued a directive for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to assume responsibility for investigating alleged financial irregularities at Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Hospital.
In response, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the West Bengal police swiftly transferred all pertinent documents and evidence to the CBI by 9:30 AM on Saturday, ahead of the court’s 10 AM deadline.
The court’s decision, handed down by Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, came amid ongoing scrutiny of the hospital’s operations under former principal Sandip Ghosh.
Justice Bharadwaj reasoned that since the CBI was already investigating a high-profile rape and murder case involving a doctor at RG Kar, it would be more efficient for the same agency to handle the financial irregularity probe.
Since 16 August, the CBI has been intensively questioning Ghosh in connection with the rape and murder case, with daily interrogations lasting between 12 to 14 hours.
The court has instructed the CBI to determine if there is any connection between the financial irregularities and the ongoing criminal investigation.
The case has garnered significant attention from the medical community, with claims that the brutal rape and murder of the doctor may have been linked to undisclosed issues at RG Kar.
There are speculations that the victim might have been aware of the financial misconduct at the hospital.
Adding to the complexity, Ghosh has challenged the court’s decision by appealing to a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, disputing the single-judge Bench’s order for a CBI-led investigation.
