CBI Launches Probe Into Doctor’s Rape & Murder At Kolkata Hospital

On Wednesday, a high-level team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), supported by a forensic expert, arrived in Kolkata to investigate the rape and murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital.

The seven-member CBI team, arriving from Delhi, first visited the agency’s Nizam Palace office in central Kolkata before proceeding to the central government office (CGO) complex in Salt Lake on the city’s northern fringe.

The CBI is likely to take custody of the primary suspect in the case, Sanjay Ray, a civic volunteer currently held by Kolkata Police.

Following a medical check-up at S S K M Medical College & Hospital, authorities will likely transfer Ray to CBI custody.

The CBI has initiated an investigation under various charges related to rape and murder.

The city police have handed over the case diary to the central agency, as directed by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court.

Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya ordered the court-monitored probe in response to concerns about the city police’s handling of the investigation.

In response, Kolkata Police have affirmed their cooperation with the CBI.

A statement from the department emphasized their commitment to aiding the investigation and ensuring justice for the victim’s family, despite their earlier efforts in handling the case.

The tragic incident, which involved the death of a junior doctor and postgraduate student whose body was discovered in a seminar room on 9 August, has incited widespread protests from medical professionals across Kolkata and India.

The arrest of Sanjay Ray has intensified calls for justice and heightened scrutiny of the case’s investigation.
