Caste Census Essential for 90% Not in System: Rahul Gandhi In Prayagraj

Prayagraj, Aug 24: Rahul Gandhi stressed the need for a caste census during the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan in Prayagraj on Saturday. He argued that policies should reflect the country’s demographics to ensure fair access to government schemes. Gandhi noted that half the population is OBC, 15% is Dalit, and 8% is tribal, totaling about 73%. He added that minorities are not included in these figures.

Gandhi criticized current policies for favoring select capitalists and benefiting only 30% of the population. He emphasized that a caste census is vital for both counting castes and assessing their economic impact. He highlighted the need to understand how wealth is distributed among OBCs, Dalits, and laborers in sectors like bureaucracy, courts, and media.

Gandhi condemned the government for neglecting the majority and stressed the importance of understanding resource allocation among these groups. He reflected on his political experience since 2004, noting that the BJP taught him what not to do.

The Congress leader reaffirmed his party’s commitment to conducting a caste-based socioeconomic census and amending the constitution to raise the 50% reservation cap for SC, ST, and OBC communities. Gandhi’s remarks mirrored Congress’s pledge from their Lok Sabha election campaign.
