Canadian PM Mark Carney To Visit India; Hold Strategic Talks With PM Modi

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to India this week to deepen bilateral engagement and conduct formal talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM Modi will host PM Carney in New Delhi following the latter’s initial engagements in Mumbai.

The Prime Minister of India and PM Carney will prioritise expanding the Canada-India partnership.

Discussions will centre on trade diversification, clean energy collaboration, advanced technology, artificial intelligence, talent mobility, cultural exchange and defence cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi will also see PM Carney engage with leading business executives to unlock investment prospects in Canada and forge new commercial alliances between enterprises in both countries.

PM Modi’s government views the visit as strategically significant amid global volatility.

PM Carney’s office stated that Canada seeks to diversify trade flows and attract substantial foreign capital to generate employment and industrial growth.

Prime Minister Modi has consistently emphasised economic resilience and supply-chain stability in conversations with global counterparts.

Expanding Strategic Partnership

PM Modi previously met PM Carney during the G20 Summit, where PM Modi underscored a bilateral trade target of USD 50 billion by 2030.

The Prime Minister of India reiterated that India and Canada possess vast untapped potential in trade and investment integration.

Two-way merchandise and services trade reached USD 30.8 billion in 2024, positioning India as Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner.

PM Modi has also acknowledged the growing interest of Canadian pension funds in Indian enterprises.

He stated that enhanced capital flows could reinforce infrastructure and innovation ecosystems.

Earlier, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the margins of the Munich Security Conference.

Both ministers reviewed progress under the joint roadmap guiding Canada-India relations.

They discussed cooperation across energy, emerging technologies and trade modernisation.

The Prime Minister of India’s administration highlighted over 75 years of diplomatic engagement and robust people-to-people linkages.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to implementing roadmap priorities and broadening economic collaboration to reinforce resilience.

Following India, PM Carney will visit Australia and Japan from February 26 to March 7.

His office described these nations as pivotal Indo-Pacific partners.

PM Modi’s forthcoming dialogue with PM Carney is expected to further consolidate strategic trust and economic convergence.
