The Calcutta High Court on Monday requested a clarification and report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding whether Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, can liquidate his fixed deposit to cover legal expenses related to ongoing cases against him.
Justice Subhendu Samanta, presiding over a single-judge vacation bench, directed the CBI to be included as a party in Ghosh’s petition. Earlier, Ghosh had sought a fast-track hearing for his case, but the court denied this request, leading to the hearing taking place on Monday afternoon.
During the proceedings, Justice Samanta noted that the CBI had not yet confiscated Ghosh’s fixed deposits. Consequently, the court deemed it necessary to seek the agency’s opinion on the matter.

Additionally, the court heard Ghosh’s bail plea on Monday. However, the court postponed the matter until November 4 because the CBI counsel was absent, and it will resume after its festival vacation.
The CBI is currently investigating Ghosh in two separate cases. The first pertains to financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, while the second involves the rape and murder of a junior female doctor from the same institution this past August. In the latter case, Ghosh faces serious allegations of misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence, following the initial inquiry conducted by Kolkata Police before the CBI took over the case.
Moreover, the CBI is also investigating Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, under similar charges. Both Ghosh and Mondal are currently in judicial custody.
