Calcutta High Court Denies Fast-Track Hearing For Former Medical College Principal

A vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court has denied a plea from Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, seeking expedited consideration of his case regarding the cancellation of his medical registration by the West Bengal Medical Council.

The court, led by Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, ruled that the matter does not warrant urgent attention during the court’s festive season recess.

Ghosh’s registration was revoked on September 18 following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar.

The CBI has since accused him of misleading investigations and tampering with evidence, charges that emerged after the initial probe by Kolkata Police.

The West Bengal Medical Council issued a show-cause notice to Ghosh on September 7, requiring a response within three days. However, due to his custody, he was unable to reply, leading to the inevitable cancellation of his registration. The council formalized the cancellation with a notification on September 19.

Calls for Ghosh’s registration cancellation have intensified from the medical community, including prominent voices like former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Santanu Sen, who is also a medical practitioner.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has previously urged the council to take immediate action regarding Ghosh’s registration.

The vacation bench’s decision highlights the ongoing legal and ethical scrutiny surrounding Ghosh’s case amidst growing concerns from the medical fraternity in West Bengal.
